Intergranular/Interstitial Porosity Measurement In Shale Gas Reservoirs Using Conventional Helium Porosimetry Techniques

Abstract

Roseneath and Murteree shales samples from wells Momba46 and Della4 have been used to measure the total free porosity. These carbonaceous shales are acting both as source and reservoir for natural gas methane. Results from Helium Porosimetry techniques show that effective porosity and permeability are both very low while the pyknometer has revealed that these gas reservoirs have very high total free porosity as documented by the FIB/SEM images. Helium Porosimetry techniques, we think, are likely to give doubtful effective porosity values when applied for shale gas reservoir evaluation.
