Use of pore pressure prediction and software for infill-drilling in the Cowralli Field (Cooper Basin)

Abstract

This project aims at reviewing the practical application of pore pressure prediction by applying techniques available in the commercial software Drillworks. The software will be used to analyse reservoir pore pressure in the Cowralli Field, Cooper Basin, based on log derived measurements obtained in shales.

Two methods of calculating pore pressure will be applied, the first utilizing measurements of sonic travel time, the second using resistivity measurements. Cowralli 4, a well drilled in this field will be analysed and its corresponding pore pressure curve will be derived based on equations developed by Eaton. A prediction of the fracture pressure gradient will also be determined for the well.

The predicted pore pressure curves will then be calibrated using downhole pressure measurements and used to determine what the formation pressure is for specific reservoir intervals, where there has been a failure to obtain a pressure measurement.
